The nature of the client’s self-reported early relationships has been shown to directly determine outcome, irrespective of the treatment offered (Hilliard, Henry, & Strupp, 2000).

Because treatments are not supported by research, it does not necessarily mean that they are not effective. At this time we do not know their effectiveness. Therefore we cannot make valid claims as to which techniques are the most effective. Evidence-based treatments cannot be automatically applied in daily practice because of a variety of reasons. The research supporting their superiority over other techniques has flaws that lead to questioning the power of the techniques and whether it is the technique that really causes the improvement.

Similarly, the researcher’s belief in the effectiveness of the treatment being evaluated can alter the outcome of studies. , 1999).
